Episode 9: Stretching The Comfort Zone

I’m on top of the SkyCity in Auckland. You can see the backdrop there — overlooking the Auckland City and the Harbour. It’s really beautiful here. I’m actually about to speak at Lyceum this weekend so I took the time to come over here to get my mindset right.

The reason why I’m here on top of SkyCity is because I’m just about to go to the roof of this tower and jump off. It’s more like base jumping but obviously it’s harnessed. But the thing is, when you look down to the bottom from the top of the tower, you can not sort of have this inner fear because I think it’s built in all of us. This lizard brain, this resistance that sits there and goes “What are you doing?”

Comfort Zone vs Safety Zone

Now, I come to do these type of things because I want to challenge my mindset. I want to challenge where my comfort zones are and one of the things that I talk a lot about is what Seth Godin mentions in his book called “Icarus Deception.  He talks about this comfort zone versus the safety zone.

The safety zone is when any rock climber would know that there is a point in your judgment when you just need to know that if you make that one next move, that’s going to create a huge problem. That’s going to cause you life or death. You better not take it rather than to basically climb another day.

Comfort zone is the comfort zone that stops us from doing things that challenges us. What he says is that most of us have decided to make that comfort zone, a safety zone. So basically what he’s saying is that a lot of times  what we’re doing, the comfort zone that’s within us is  the comfort zone that stops us from being better than who we are. We live in mediocrity.

And so as I talk a lot about Inside The Champion’s Mind is how to create yourself to stretch your comfort zone in to a level where you can actually start to build yourself to another person, to transform yourself, to kind of push your limits all the time. But never to test the safety zone, but to push yourself over the comfort zone.

Is this a safety zone issue or a comfort zone issue?

So what I challenge you is to look at yourself and what are some of the things that you are stressed about? Are you scared of speaking in front of the public? Are you scared to ask for a new patient? Are you scared to do a marketing campaign? Are you scared to tell the patient the truth about what they need? So whatever it is, it’s not a life or death situation. It is a comfort zone thing not a safety zone thing. So I suggest you use whatever challenge you might have, ask yourself “Is this a safety zone issue or a comfort zone issue?”

If it’s a comfort zone issue, you might want to give yourself that chance to test what your limits are in the comfort zone and try to do it and see what comes out of it because I think you will grow and just by testing your comfort zone is.

So wish me luck! I’m going to jump off this tall building. I will leave you with this thought and view of where I’m going to.
